Ask an Explainer

Q:

Can we use solar winds or solar radiation and convert them into fuel for rockets to fly in space?

A:

Yes! As a matter of fact, we can use solar radiation to help power spacecrafts (through solar panels) - like Juno, for example - but we can also use it's radiation as a form of wind - ever hear of a solar sail

Just like a ship on the sea, future space ships could harness solar winds to propell themselves through space. It would be a very exciting advancement, because it would mean being able to fly indefinitely through space without bringing propellant or fuel.
