Ask an Explainer

Q:

How do you make a simple rocket?

A:

A simple rocket can be made with something that acts as a vehicle and something that creates thrust. If you want to make a simple vehicle that can thrust forward, one way is to use a rocket balloon. NASA describes literal rockets as both a type of engine and the vehicle that uses a rocket engine. The first rockets were very simple and were created in the form of tall, round fireworks in China. Rocket balloons are balloons that are tall and round, and have a hole that allows air to move out from the balloon. That air acts like exhaust from a real rocket and works to move the balloon forward.
