Q:

If the difference between a jet and a rocket is that rockets carry their own fuel, is a model rocket really a rocket?

A:

The way jets and rockets carry fuel isn't the only difference. Rocket engines are a form jet engine! One difference is that jets have two holes, one to let air in and the other as an exhaust, while rockets only have an exhaust. Model rockets are rockets, and fireworks are too, because they operate using the principles of rocket propulsion. We call them chemical rocket engines, because they use combustion to produce thrust.
