Ask an Explainer

Q:

What other materials are used in planes (e.g seats, cabin, etc.)?

A:

Many different materials are used!

Airplaine seats are designed to be light, but at the same time strong, and even fire resistant! But they also need to be comfy for a person to sit in for a long time. Usually they are made of light alumnium (like the rest of the plane) with blocks of polyurethane foam. Sometimes they have fire-resistant fabric, like Kevlar, covered by a layer of cloth.

The rest of the aircraft cabin interior is made up of a wide variety of materials. The walls that seperate the seating areas are filled with fire retardant foam. The material that coats the sides of the cabin is made of plasticizers.
