Ask an Explainer

Q:

Which exerts more pressure, static or dynamic pressure?

A:

There is no flat answer to the question -- it depends on the conditions that prevail. The static pressure in a gas is what you feel just due to the random motion of the molecules. Dynamic pressure is that extra pressure due to any directed motion of the gas. So whether the static or dynamic pressure is higher depends on the velocity and density of the gas.
