Q:

Why do we have to fly across to go somewhere, why can't we use a boat and not a airplane?

A:

Taking a boat is not always the best option, especially when you want to get somewhere quickly. For example, crossing the Atlantic ocean can take over a week on a boat, but in a plane, that time is reduced to only 7 hours. That's a huge difference!

There are also places that cannot be accessed by boat. Land locked countries may not have rivers that boats can travel on. Airplanes have the advantiage of being able to fly places some boats cannot reach.

However, the opposite is sometimes true: in places like the Amazon rain forest, planes cannot land, but boats make it easy to travel. It all depends on the situation!
