Q:

Why does the earth revolve at a fixed distance from the sun?

A:

The earth is technically not orbiting at a fixed distance. The earth goes around in an elliptical orbit and the distance from the sun varies. The average distance is about 150 million kilometers. The closest point is 147 million kilometers (91.4 million miles) and the most distant point is 152 million kilometers (94.5 million miles). Gravity and Newton's First Law of Motion work to keep the earth in that orbit.
