Ask an Explainer

Q:

Would it be possible for a helicopter to be amphibious and land on air and water?

A:

Amphibious helicopters do exist and have been in use since the early 1940's. These helicopters can take off and land either in the water or on solid ground. Some of the special things they can do that a normal helicopter can’t include air-sea rescue, studying the ocean, and marine salvage efforts.
