Q:

Can the engine be placed above the plane's wing?

A:

Some Aircraft have engines placed at the tail of the plane, which is above the wing. However this is generally reserved for smaller aircraft. The problem with top mounted engines is that the center of gravity of the aircraft is shifted back, causing balance issues. On larger aircraft, placing the engines below the wings allows the center of gravity to be lower and more centered making the whole airplane more balanced. It also reduces noise pollution inside cabin, so passengers can enjoy a quieter flight.
