Q:

Hi, I'm a teacher and this month's theme is transportation. We have a debate going as to whether a parachute is considered a mode of transportation. What do you say?

A:

Depending on the definition, a parachute can be a mode of transportation. According to Merriam-Webster, transportation is defined as “the act or process of moving people or things from one place to another; a way of traveling from one place to another place; a system for moving passengers or goods from one place to another.”  A parachute is a way of moving people or objects from one place to another and therefore is a form of transportation. However, it is not a system of transportation. A system of transportation requires infrastructure, vehicles, workforce, propulsion system, and power supply, and operations. Hope this helps!
