Ask an Explainer
Q:
How come when a spacecraft reenters Earth's atmosphere it does not break into tiny pieces?
A:
When a spacecraft reenters Earth's atmosphere, it is exposed to very high heat, so it needs a protective barrier. Older crafts, like the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo had a one-time-use ablation shield that burned off upon reentry. Orbiters, like Discovery, use heat-resistant, ceramic tiles and a blunt shape to protect it.
