Q:

How did Alan Shepard breathe during his Freedom 7 flight?

A:

Freedom 7 was the first US human space flight, way back in 1961. It was piloted by Alan Shepard, who then became the first American in space.

 

During his flight, his helmet provided oxygen to breathe, much like modern day fighter pilots or astronauts when they are inside their space suits.
