Ask an Explainer
Q:
How do you identify tractor and pusher propellers?
A:
Tractor propellers are propellers located at the front of the plane. Pusher propellers are located at the back of the airplane. Before the invention of the synchronization gear that allowed military aircraft to fire guns through propeller blades, pushers were one solution to military needs. Tractors have historically been more aerodynamically efficient. There were also some safety concerns if a pilot needed evacuate a pusher in midair.
