Q:

How does a rocket engine work?

A:

In a rocket engine, an oxydizer mixes fuel, which results in combustion. This pushes on every side of the engine, but not on the bottom, since the pressure from the reaction cannot push against the hole at the bottom of the engine, called the exhaust. Since there is more push on the top of the engine than on the bottom, the rocket will go up! This is called rocket thrust.
