Q:
How far behind an aircraft do the wingtip vortices affect the flight envelope of a preceding aircraft?
A:
It depends on a number of factors, particularly weight and airspeed. The FAA has required distances of as much as 16 kilometers (10 miles) between planes during landing. During takeoff, the FAA may require waits up to three minutes after takeoff before another plane is allowed to takeoff.
