Q:

Old planes look like they are made out of plastic but how is that possible since plastic is a new technology?

A:

This is thanks to a vibrant paint job. Some of the first planes were made out of lightweight canvas materials, and painted with a sealant paint to keep them protected from wear and tear. Soon, metals became easier to work with, and aircraft were made of metals like aluminum. Making a plane out of plastic might make the plane light enough, but would not make it sturdy enough.
