In regards to the Bell X-1, how much faster is the speed of light than the speed of sound?
A:
The speed of light is about 1,000,000 times faster than the speed of sound at sea level. The Bell X-1 was never able to fly faster than the speed of light (3,000 Km/s). However, it was able to fly faster than the speed of sound at Mach 1.06, or 0.313 Km/s. At Mach 1, an object is traveling at the speed of sound.
