Ask an Explainer
Q:
Is there a proportion between the weight of the airplane and the area of its wings?
A:
Yes! It is known as the square-cube law. This states that as an object gets bigger, its volume will increase faster than its area. As the volume of a plane increases, the weight also tends to increase. This is important when building an airplane's wings because the wings have to be large enough to lift up the rest of the plane. If the fuselage of the airplane needs to be bigger, the wings will have to be a lot bigger to support the new volume.
