Q:
What is ablation?
A:
Ablation is a synonym for removal. When re-entry vehicles move through the atmosphere, their intense speed creates friction with the surrounding air. This friction will actually start to burn away at the vehicle. This also happens with meteors entering the atmosphere, which we call falling stars!
This is why space ships need ablation shields. The shield is thick and made of slow burning materials, which means it will burn instead of the capsule that the crew sits in.
