Ask an Explainer
Q:
What materials did they use to construct the rutan voyager?
A:
The Rutan Voyager was a very unique aircraft made from mainly fiberglass, Kevlar, and carbon fiber. It also used multiple other composite materials. Overall, weight was an important factor in the flight and so the materials that were chosen were very lightweight. The weight of the airframe was around 426 kilograms (939 pounds) when it was empty. You can learn more about the history of this aircraft here at the National Air and Space Museum's website!
