Ask an Explainer
Q:
What is an oxidizer?
A:
An oxidizer is a kind of chemical that fuel needs in order to burn. We see this a lot in rockets. On Earth, the atmosphere contains oxygen to fuel chemical reactions.
In a rocket, though, an oxidizer is used to react with the fuel, creating a combusion which creates thrust, propelling the rocket forward.
