Q:
What is plume drag and spill over drag?
A:
The plume that exits the backend of the jet engine, or a rocket, indirectly creates drag, which we call plume drag. The boundary layer around the rocket can interact with the plume, creating a drag that tries to split the boundary layer from the vehicle.
Not all of the air in front of a jet engine makes it into the entrance. What doesn’t make it through is spill over, which will increase the pressure drag. This is what we call spill over drag.
