Q:
What structures provide the most support for the least weight?
A:
The I-beam and honeycomb geometric shapes provide maximum support for the least amount of weight. The I-beam is a relatively light weight beam that provides support for most buildings and structures. The two extra flat pieces on the I-beam provide support to the force applied in a perpendicular angle to the beam.
The honeycomb structure consist of hundreds of tiny hexagon and octagon shapes positioned next to each other. A thin material (usually metal or plastic) is placed on both sides to increase strength while minimizing weight. Aircraft use a combination of both honeycomb and I-beam structures in order to make the strongest but lightweight planes.
