Q:
What will happen to an aircraft if it loses part its vertical tailfin?
A:
Bad things! The vertical tailfin is used for stability and for control over yaw. The rudder is used to control the direction a plane is facing. If this tail is damaged, it would be difficult to control the plane. However, the plane could still land, so long as the landing strip is in a reasonably straight line, since the rudder controls movment left and right.
