Q:

When did airplanes start having the modern fuselage that we see today?

A:

The first airplane, the Wright Flyer from all the way back in 1903, definitely did not look like today's airplanes. It had wings, an elevator and a rudder like we still do, but the rest was different. 

It was during the first world war, in 1914, that the modern fuselage started to appear: the monocoque fuselage (one fuselage) with only one pair of wings. But this was still made of wood and fabric! Aluminum started to appear in airplanes as soon as 1918.
