Q:

Why is AA 2219 aluminium alloy restricted for aircraft structural parts?

A:

The AA2219 alloy is not restricted only to aircraft usage; it is available from many suppliers. The 2000 family of aluminum alloys have copper as the main alloying agent and are known for their ability to be heat treated and high strength. Many aircraft actually use the 2024 alloy. The 2219 alloy is used more commonly in spacecraft because, unlike many other aluminum alloys, it can be welded by gas-metal arc or gas-tungsten arc welding.  In run-of-the-mill aircraft manufacturing rivets are used as fastening devices, but space vehicles demand more than just rivets and that’s where 2219 and welding come into play.
