Q:

Why can't I use my phone on a plane?

A:

Portable electronic devices, like phones, can emit a powerful enough electromagnetic radiation to interfere with an aircraft's navigation and communication systems. The difference between cell phones and those built into the plane is that the plane uses radio signals from antennas on the aircraft that meet the Federal Aviation Administration specifications.
