Q:

Why do astronauts need special food in space?

A:

Astronauts eat the same meals as they would on Earth, they have just been packaged differently and require special preparation. Astronauts eat three meals a day, and have snacks and drinks, too. Think of how much space all of that food would take up!

The space station does not have a fridge, so astronauts have to prepare their food in a very special way to keep it from going bad. Freeze dried food is very common, but so is intermidiate moisture food (not all water has been removed, so it needs to be eaten quickly. Freeze drying food makes it possilbe to save room by elimnating all of the liquid in the food we eat.
