Q:
Why is mercury used in pressure measuring instruments?
A:
Mercury has been used in heat and pressure measuring instruments since the first intruments were made.
Metals are very good conducters of heat. They expand and contract depending on the pressure or temeperature of their environment. Mercury is the only one which is liquid at room temperature, which makes it easy to work with. A tiny change in temperature can make its volume grow or shrink, so it can easily be read on a scale.
