Ask an Explainer
Q:
Why must a paper airplane rely on altitude and gravity?
A:
A paper airplane has no engines to produce thrust.
The paper airplane is being pulled down by gravity, but creates a lot of drag as it falls: this means that the more altitude it has when it started, the more time it will stay airborne and the further it will fly. If it flies just right, the speed it gains on this descent will give it lift, which will keep it in the air even longer.
