Rocket engines produce thrust by creating a pressure difference in the combustion chamber, resulting in more force in the forward direction. Rocket engines work in both Earth’s atmosphere and the vacuum of space, because they carry their own oxidizer to burn fuel. This RocketDyne F-1 Liquid-Fuel Engine is on display in the National Air and Space Museum’s Apollo to the Moon gallery. The mirror arrangement shows the cluster of five F-1 rocket engines as seen from the aft end of the first stage of the Apollo/Saturn V launch vehicle.
