Jet engines produce thrust through a pressure difference throughout the engine, resulting in more force in the forward direction. This General Electric J85-GE-17A turbojet engine (cutaway) was the first U.S. turbine engine to go into production in 1958. The J85 had the highest thrust-to-weight ratio of production engines built for its time. More than 12,000 J85 engines were built by the time production ended in 1988.
