A glider does not need an engine to produce thrust; it relies on gravity to provide thrust. This is a model of the Lilienthal 1894 Glider on display in the Early Flight gallery in the National Air and Space Museum. Otto Lilienthal’s glider experiments, and untimely death, inspired Orville and Wilbur Wright to tackle the problem of powered, sustained, and controlled heavier-than-air flight.
