Q:

How is a sound wave formed in air?

A:

A sound wave is composed of compression waves and expansion waves in the air; it's the vibration in pressure. This is why a speaker vibrates when it is playing a sound - it is creating vibrations in the air. It travels in a single direction, and we interpret it as sound through the use of our ears. It can only travel through a medium. Space, which is a vacuum, does not carry sound waves.
