Ask an Explainer
Q:
Why does the airplane have an aluminum body? Why not steel?
A:
Airplanes need to limit their weight to fly well. Steel is increadibly heavy, so it's not worth using on planes: aluminum is light, and less expensive, so it's perfect for airplanes. However, steel IS still used on very specific parts that take a lot of stress, like the landing gear.
