Q:
Why doesn't the Earth move towards the center of it's circular path?
A:
The Earth actually follows an elliptical path. The Earth is being pulled towards the Sun, but it also has some initial momentum which causes it to move perpendicularly to the Sun. The Sun's gravity is pulling on the Earth enough to keep it from flying off in a straight line, but not enough to bring the Earth closer in.
